office and serving in the Colony on or before
the 31st of March, 1937, if the maximum rent
which he is liable to pay for Government quarters
does not at the time of his retirement exceed
7% of his salary, and in the case of every
European Mistress in the Education Department
entitled to rent allowance, there shall be added
an allowance equal to one-sixth of his salary
or to £200 a year in the case of a sterling
salary or to $2,000 a year in the case of a
dollar salary, whichever sum is the less. In
the case of every officer holding pensionable
office who was first appointed to the service of
this Colony after the 31st of March, 1937, and
at the time of his retirement is entitled to
free quarters, there shall be added an allowance
equal to one-sixth of his salary or to £150 in
the case of a sterling salary or to $2,000 per
annum in the case of a dollar salary, whichever
sum is the less. In the case of a European
matron of or a European Nursing Sister in a
Government Hospital who is entitled to free
quarters there shall be added an allowance equal
to one-sixth of her salary or to £50 whichever
sum is the greater."
An amendment on these lines would admit of
officers personally appointed in the future on the old terms as to quarters (as proposed in paragraph 24 of this Report)
benefiting by the existing provisions of the law.

II. RENT FOR QUARTERS AND RENT OR LODGING ALLOWANCES.
